South Shore Conservatory’s Jazz/Rock/Pop students perform their prepared piece on stage in front of a live audience and a panel of supportive faculty members. Artists receive feedback and certificates from judges and a panel of their peers. Audience members are invited to listen to the mix of acts and decide for themselves which act was their favorite. This JRP Spotlight Festival is the fifth of six performances in SSC’s 2018/2019 season of its Jazz/Rock/Pop Series.

SSC’s 2019 Summer Spotlight outdoor concert series features shining examples of excellence in performance, including the popular Evenings Under the Stars Saturday evening concerts and beloved Wacky Wednesdays family concerts. 

Evenings Under the Stars 2019 performances are full of fresh talent, grooving music and ties to SSC’s JRP series this summer.  Your backstage pass, Sip!@Summer Spotlight gives guests a special live performance in SSC’s Cox Hall all while enjoying a refreshing drink sponsored by Barrel House Z. Creative light bites and on-site parking included with each ticket purchase. 6-7 pm, $25.

This season, Wacky Wednesdays performances are even more FUN, with kid-friendly food on sale, kid swag, and the opportunity to meet the artists for autographs. Stay and play on the playground, or bring along a picnic lunch to extend the fun.

Making a return for this summer’s concerts are food trucks at each performance. Interspersed throughout the series are Sadie Mae’s Cupcake Café and Zack’s ice cream truck, offering a variety of foods such as indulgent cupcakes and sweet ice cream treats to top off the performance experience.  Concerts take place rain or shine, group ticket rates are available, tickets are non-refundable.

Evenings Under the Stars tickets purchased prior to performance: $40 pavilion, $25 lawn, tickets purchased at performance: $45 pavilion, $30 lawn.  7 pm Concerts take place rain or shine.  Tickets are non-refundable.  No Pets Allowed. Service dogs welcome.

Saturday parking is at the Hingham School Bus Depot, 19 Fort Hill St. Shuttle buses provide transportation to and from the Carr Amphitheater at South Shore Conservatory. Shuttle bus service from the Hingham Bus Depot begins at 5:30 pm. The last bus leaves the bus depot at 6:55 pm.

Vanessa Trien and the Jumping Monkeys

Vanessa Trien has been performing music for kids and families since 2005, many of those years in collaboration with her lively folk/roots/pop band, the Jumping Monkeys. She has three Parents’ Choice award-winning CDs for kids, Vanessa packs concert halls, preschool fundraisers and outdoor venues with dancing kids and families. She is known for her highly interactive shows, featuring plenty of group singing and movement.

Recently voted the Best Kindie Band in the Greater-Boston area by Mommy Poppins, Karen K & the Jitterbugs has become a favorite among kids and kid-ults in Boston and beyond. Known for their totally engaging, high-energy show packed with humor and amazingly catchy, well-crafted tunes, Karen K & the Jitterbugs is fun for the whole family.

Bringing the best blues to you for 35 years! This band is not limited to one style, but able to play Chicago Blues in the style of Muddy Waters. Little Walter and Billy Boy Arnold; Kansas City Swing in the style of “Big” Joe Turner; Texas Blues like “T” Bone Walker and Freddie King; and the swampy Louisiana sounds of “Lazy” Lester-all played with the distinctive originality of band leader Sugar Ray Norcia, vocals and harmonica, guitarist Little Charlie Baty, Anthony Geraci at the piano and Hammond Organ, Michael “Mudcat” Ward playing acoustic and electric bass, and drummer Neil Gouvin.

SSC’s ImagineARTS Band

During the school year, our SSC ImagineARTS Band shares its favorite stories and songs with kindergarteners in Brockton, through ImagineARTS, an arts-integrated literacy program. SSC invites children and adults to join the band in moving, grooving, and crooning along to tunes such as See How I’m Jumping, She’ll Be Coming ‘Round the Mountain, and Funga Alafia. This concert, great for ages 3-7 years, concludes with a special presentation of the popular children’s story “Pete the Cat and the New Guy.”

Radio Days Classics:  Music of the Big Band Era!

Matt Heaton believes music for kids can be entertaining for both children AND parents. His songs are a mix of rockabilly, surf, American roots and Irish traditional music, delivered with a wry sense of humor and a sincere sense of fun.  Children and adults respond to his musicianship and variety. The adults in the room particularly appreciate the Muppet-esque touches of humor and observations of kid behavior.  Whether you call it children’s music, family music, kindie or toddlerbilly it’s sure to please listeners of all ages.

South Shore Conservatory’s Duxbury Music Festival is an intensive program for solo and chamber instrumental performance, unique to all of New England.

Founded with the knowledge that music enriches the human spirit and the belief that this enrichment endures in the lives of its participants, the Duxbury Music Festival is located in this idyllic seaside community, thirty-five miles south of Boston and twenty miles north of Cape Cod.

The Duxbury Music Festival is an intensive program for the study and performance of solo and chamber repertoire for undergraduate and graduate students and adult professionals. Festival Director, Stephen Deitz, has gathered a renowned faculty who offer chamber performances, as well as individual instruction and ensemble coaching.

7th Annual Let’s Do Jo’s Plein Air Painting weekend

Hull Artists and Jo’s Nautical Bar co-host their annual En Plein Air (open air) painting event, welcoming local artists from across the region to paint on site with beautiful views, a plethora of nautical, sea, beach and land vistas, where the public can enjoy the creativity at work live!

A “Wet Paint” exhibit begins Sunday at 5 pm, with a vote and a cash prize awarded to the popular favorite. Fine art and artisan craft items donated by Hull Artists’ members, and other donated prizes, are available for a raffle, displayed all weekend. Live music, refreshments and light fare are available both days.

Live paintings created during the weekend are featured at an opening reception on Friday, June 28 from 6 to 8 pm at Hull Artists’ Gallery Nantasket, 121 Nantasket Ave, Hull.  The art continues on display for one week, available for purchase.

24th Annual Open Studios

July 12 through 14 and August 16 through 18, 10 am to 4 pm

Since 1996, Hull Artists has produced Open Studios, a signature art event of the South Shore region.  Annually, 40 exceptional artists showcase original work in their homes and in select community locations, where visitors can see their work up close and enjoy meeting the artist hosts. The dazzling array of media includes oil and acrylics, pastel, watercolor, photography, fiber art (quilts, knitting, hand-dyed wearable art), sculpture, up-cycled home goods, basketry, and more.  Open Studios are free, children are welcome, and parking is abundant. 

Beginning in early June, a full-color catalog of artists, and map of their locations is available in dozens of locations around the South Shore, as well as at Hull Artist’s headquarters at Gallery Nantasket, located at 121 Nantasket Ave. (Ocean Park Condominium retail shops). The guide and map are also available on after May 15 at www.hullartists.com.

While exploring Hull’s wonderful and varied neighborhoods, we encourage visitors to enjoy unparalleled views and the marvelous restaurants and vendors whose support helps keep Open Studios accessible to all, free of charge.

Join the CCCO in a program featuring William Grant Still, who in 1931 became the first African American composer to have a symphony debuted by a major American orchestra. His success followed when in 1936 he became the first African American to conduct a major orchestra, when he led the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl.

Clarinetist David Dziardziel will perform Copland’s. majestic Clarinet Concerto, and the CCCO concludes the concert with Nielsen’s Little Suite for Strings.

Summer Programs

July 15 through 19, 9 am to 3:30 pm

Summer Chorale

For singers entering grades 4 through 7 this fall.  Students spend each morning learning choral music and vocal techniques with the aid of top-notch music educators, and spend afternoons learning musical notation reading skills, and bonding through team building activities.  Summer Chorale engages in repertoire appropriate for young treble voices, with an emphasis on vocal technique, ear training and choral rehearsal skills.

Summer Choral Intensive

For singers entering grades 8 through 12, or just graduating from high school.  A program that focuses on themes of leadership, personal responsibility and musical excellence. Students are encouraged to prepare for participation with learning tools provided by SSCC staff to aid them in performing high-level choral repertoire. Students attend sight singing classes geared for their level of knowledge, enjoy guest speakers including local professors and professional musicians, benefit from group sectionals, and engage in a vocal technique class with a professional section leader of their specific voice range.

A program culminating finale concert featuring all students, open to the public, is performed on Friday, July 19 at 7 pm on campus.

In this performance by ATC’s Studio Americana elementary students, Jim’s fantasy comes to life when pirate Billy Bones steps right into his bedroom!  Suddenly we’re swept into the action of high seas adventure! Billy Bones leaves Jim a treasure map and we’re off!  Sailing on the Hispaniola to Skeleton Island!  The ship’s crew are a rowdy bunch, who are whipped into mutiny by the one-legged man, Long John Silver. When the Captain and his loyal sailors are captured, only our boy hero — Jim Hawkins can save the day!

As he struggles to fit in, Ren faces an uphill battle to change things. With the help of his new friend, Willard Hewitt, and defiant teen Ariel Moore, he might loosen up this conservative town. But Ariel’s influential father, Reverend Shaw Moore, stands in the way.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most celebrated Sherlock Holmes story gets a gloriously funny makeover in this ‘wonderfully barking spoof’ (Daily Telegraph) for a cast of three actors playing multiple roles.

When Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead on his estate, with a look of terror still etched on his face, and the paw prints of a gigantic hound beside his body, the great detective Sherlock Holmes is summoned from Baker Street, with Dr. Watson in tow, to unravel the mysteries surrounding his death, and investigate the ancient curse of the Hound of the Baskervilles.  Directed by Brance Cornelius.

Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival (CCCMF)

The Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival, celebrating 40 years as Cape Cod’s premiere presenter of summer chamber music, presents 12 compelling concerts in August, under the leadership of   Directors Jon Nakamatsu and Jon Manasse, and Executive Director Elaine Lipton. 

CCCMF hosts the critically acclaimed Miró Quartet as ensemble-in-residence for the Festival’s final week, performing three concerts in combination with guest musicians and the artistic directors.

Ticket orders received on or before June 30: $36 general admission; $15 for college students with ID); FREE for attendees 18 and under. General admission to three or more concerts: $34 per ticket. Emerson String Quartet concert: $52 ($50 when purchased as part of the three-concert package).

Ticket orders received on or after July 1: $40 general admission; $15 for college students (with ID); FREE for attendees 18 and under. General admission to three or more concerts: $38 per ticket. Emerson String Quartet concert: $57 ($55 when purchased as part of the three-concert package).

The piece is performed in English translation by gifted opera singers from all over New England. The performance is filled with some of the most famous gems of operatic repertoire.
