A History of Paragon Park with Author Chris Haraden

Writer Chris Haraden shares his stories of growing up literally in the shadow of Paragon Park’s Giant Coaster. From his home on the hill behind the park, Haraden learned the stories of Paragon, and the broader scope of Hull’s history, from his grandfather, a park employee best known for walking the tracks of the roller coaster each morning before the gates opened. Haraden’s first job was in the penny arcade, where he might have embellished his age to be hired and where met his future wife, Marilyn – one of the many love stories that began on the shores of Nantasket Beach.
In addition to compiling a history of Paragon Park, Chris Haraden authored “Storm of the Century: New England’s Great Blizzard of 1978” and contributed to “Hull & Nantasket Beach: Then & Now.” He is a writer for The Hull Times and serves on the Advisory Board of the Friends of the Paragon Carousel. Guest faculty provide daily ballet class plus variations, pointe, modern, musical theatre, jazz, tap, hip hop, yoga, and conditioning. The final “Nutcracker Week” prepares students interested in participating in the school’s annual 2023 production of the holiday season classic, including an end of program performance on July 28. Students receive personalized, professional instruction.

“Rhapsody in Red: 200 Years of Massachusetts Cranberries” is a curated traveling exhibit in celebration of Massachusetts Cranberries’ bicentennial, created in 2016. This one-of-a-kind original exhibit showcasing the Commonwealth’s official state fruit and top agricultural crop was generously supported by the Cranberry Educational Foundation in its mission to introduce the American cranberry, cranberry farming, and its heritage to the public. The timeless display explores commercial cranberry growing in Massachusetts, focusing on key themes of the cranberry industry’s rich history, commitment to environmental stewardship, technological innovations, and its growing diversity.
Cranberries and cranberry bogs are an iconic element of Massachusetts’ historical, cultural, and natural landscapes. As one of only four commercially-grown berries still native to New England, the cranberry draws strong historical ties to the earliest inhabitants of the Commonwealth, including the first English settlers. Today, in the 21st century, growers strive to keep the tradition alive as part of the common cultural landscape by combining sustainable agricultural practices with environmental stewardship. The industry protects essential upland and wetland habitats, harnesses renewable energy such as wind and solar power, and adopts new technologies to reduce water use on bogs.

Massachusetts Cranberries offers educational field trips for summer camp organizations. Youth have the opportunity to learn all things cranberry, including the cranberry history of Southeastern Massachusetts, and how cranberry farming works. Activities include historic equipment displays, bog-side grower discussions, the Association’s Traveling Bog, and a cranberry farming game. Each attendee is welcome to create their own “bog in a cup” to take home. Free parking for buses and passenger vehicles is available on site. The American experience has always been unique. In Pilgrim Festival Chorus’s program, “American Voices,” the summer choral ensemble shares music on the themes of remembrance, strife, and fun. This delightful concert features music showcasing folk songs, spirituals, shape-note hymns, and songs from two American musicals – “Ragtime” and “Guys and Dolls.”
PFC participates in the Card to Culture Program, a collaboration between Mass Cultural Council and the Department of Transitional Assistance, the Women, Infants & Children (WIC) Nutrition Program, and the Massachusetts Health Connector, by broadening accessibility to cultural programming. The Who, one of rock’s most iconic bands, made the charts in 1964 with their hit song, “Can’t Explain,” launching their amazing journey to fame. With five decades of performances under their belt, The Who’s music can be heard in commercials, television theme songs, and on the radio. Magic Bus, a tribute band based in Portland, Maine, captures The Who’s authentic original sound and feel. Band members take the audience on a musical tour of the rock band’s discography, covering top tracks from “My Generation” to “Who Are You,” and select songs from rock operas “Tommy” and “Quadrophenia.”

John Cariani’s play “Almost, Maine,” comprises nine short plays exploring love, loss, and a little bit of magic in a remote, mythical almost-town named “Almost,” Maine. On a cold, clear midwinter night, under the northern lights in the sky above, Almost’s residents are falling in and out of love in the strangest ways. Love is lost, found, and confounded, and life for the people of Almost will never be the same.
“Almost, Maine,” premiered at Portland Stage Company, where it broke box office records and garnered critical acclaim. Playwright John Cariani released a new novel based on the play in 2022. The warmth and humor of the Mainers populating this story are truly extraordinary. What better place to enjoy this show than in “Maine’s Most Enchanting Playhouse?” Featuring the official Maine state song “My Sweet Maine,” by local composer Terry Swett.

Kip Tiernan was an extraordinary character and a force of nature who changed the face of social justice in Boston. The setting transforms the faerie characters from fey spirits to queer and genderqueer aliens, whose interaction with conservative Athens fundamentally changes the city for the better.
