2019-20 season offers programs in Quincy and Sharon
McGRATHPR.com – South Shore Children’s Chorus (SSCC), the region’s training program for all young singers, announces open registration for its fall programs at Quincy Point Congregational Church, 444 Washington Street, Quincy, and at Sharon Community Center, 219 Massapoag Avenue, Sharon. Three non-auditioned choirs welcome new singers beginning in September, under the direction of founding Artistic Director Kirsten Oberoi. Through positive encouragement and an uplifting environment, choristers learn to be confident and enjoy using their voices.
SSCC’s Training Choir engages students in grades K through 3 by developing their musicality and voices through songs, movement and listening. Choristers graduate from the Training Choir understanding appropriate behavior in a choral rehearsal, pitch-matching skills, basic vocal technique, beginning ear training and solfege and basic music notation reading skills. The ensemble performs at annual SSCC performances and occasionally in the community. Training Choir meets weekly on Tuesdays in Sharon, or on Wednesdays in Quincy. Singers are required to attend weekly rehearsals, as well as one All-Together rehearsal per month on Sunday afternoons, combining both Training Choir branches.
SSCC’s Intermediate Choir trains students in grades 4 through 7 to develop sight-singing skills, begin singing in two or three parts and develop more advanced vocal technique. Choristers graduate from the Intermediate Choir as independent choral singers who understand professional behavior in a choral rehearsal, vocal technique, and management and the ability to read music well. The ensemble performs at annual SSCC performances, as well as community performances throughout the season. Intermediate Choir meets weekly on Tuesdays in Sharon, or on Wednesdays in Quincy. Singers are required to attend weekly rehearsals, as well as one All-Together rehearsal per month on Sunday afternoons, combining both Intermediate Choir branches.
SSCC’s Advanced Choir instructs students in grades 8 through 12 to develop advanced sight-singing skills, sing challenging collegiate-level repertoire and develop advanced vocal technique through performance and rehearsal of a variety of musical genres. Choristers graduate from the Advanced Choir as choral leaders ready to participate in choirs at the professional or college level, who exemplify respectful behavior in a choral rehearsal, model advanced vocal technique and management and demonstrate impressive sight-singing and music theory skills. As a premiere SSCC ensemble, the Advanced Choir performs at annual SSCC performances, as well as community performances throughout the season.
South Shore Children’s Chorus was founded in 2016 by colleagues Kirsten Oberoi and Carey Shunskis. SSCC debuted with choral classes for singers in grades pre-K through grade 9. The following season, SSCC founded its annual summer programs, and shortly after initiated an Advanced Choir serving high school aged singers in grades 8 to 12. SSCC has collaborated with several music organizations including The Treble Chorus of New England, Genesis Chamber Singers, Quincy Choral Society and Atlantic Symphony Orchestra. South Shore Children’s Chorus recently expanded to a secondary rehearsal site in Sharon.
South Shore Children’s Chorus’s mission is to provide quality musical education and vocal training to students living in the South Shore communities and beyond. SSCC reveres the development and well-being of its students as a top priority, aiming to create a safe space and loving community for choristers to learn, grow and to find their own voice. Its programs serve dedicated, responsible singers ages 4 to 18 who are interested in a well-rounded choral education. SSCC is passionate about access for all chorister students, regardless of financial situation. Need-based tuition assistance is available by application.
