Italianate Architecture on the South Shore and Beyond ~ with Architect Jim Kelliher

Local architect Jim Kelliher demonstrates the Italianate style of architecture, a distinct 19th-century phase in the history of classical architecture. First developed in Britain by John Nash about 1802, it launched with the construction of Cronkhill in Shropshire. This small country house is generally accepted to be the first Italianate villa in England, from which is derived the Italianate architecture of the late Regency and early Victorian eras. The Italianate style was further developed and popularized by the architect Sir Charles Barry in the 1830s. Barry’s Italianate style drew heavily for its motifs on the buildings of the Italian Renaissance, though sometimes at odds with Nash’s semi-rustic Italianate villas. Sponsored by Axiom Architects.

The Choir of Saint Paul’s, together with the choristers of Saint Paul’s Choir School, perform the Fauré Requiem in conjunction with its All Souls’ Day. Celebrate family, friends, ancestors, and loved ones with the simultaneous delicacy and gravitas of Faure’s remarkable requiem in D minor, performed in seven movements, in person at Saint Paul’s Parish, or simulcast on YouTube.
Gabriel Fauré’s masterwork Requiem offers some of the most moving, dramatic choral music of the twentieth century. Scored for Fauré’s own choir of men and boys at the magnificent church of the La Madeleine in Paris, it has endured as one of his most popular works since its debut performance in 1888. Audiences are transported by this seminal French composition immersed in the beautiful acoustic of Saint Paul’s stately architecture. Saint Paul’s Choir of Boys and Schola often perform in tandem, offering inspiration for growth to student choristers educated at Saint Paul’s Choir School, adjacent to the parish.

“Christmas in Harvard Square,” a concert of festive seasonal Christmas music, features the music of composers Benjamin Britten, Franz Biebl, Herbert Howells, Theodore Marier, and others. Audiences experience a joyful celebration of the Christmas season sung by one of the few boy choirs in the United States, combined with Schola of the St. Paul’s Choir singers and professional instrumentalists, on percussion, harp, and organ.

Saint Paul’s Choir School (SPCS) is a private Catholic school for boys in the 3rd through 8th grades located in Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA. Pilgrim Festival Chorus gathers the region’s community for an informal singalong performance of one of the world’s best known choral works, Handel’s “Messiah.” First performed in Dublin in 1742, it is a favorite with both singers and audiences worldwide. The chorus’s singing member, community singers, and volunteer soloists and instrumentalists join with the church’s historic 1887 organ, cello, and flute to sing through Part I of this iconic masterwork. The audience, led by Pilgrim Festival Chorus members, serves as the performers. The evening includes a sing-along of seasonal favorite carols. Bring your own score or borrow one at the door, come to sing or to listen!
