Boston Playwrights’ Theatre (BPT) presents free public readings of two new plays developed through its annual Jack Welch Residencies. The readings close a week of development with each playwright, running December 1 through 6.
At 1 pm, the Jack Welch Developmental Residency presents “Everything After” by Masha Obolensky, directed by Shawn LaCount. It’s a fabulist tale about showing up for the people you love. Two siblings, ages 15 and 12, are coping with their mother’s departure when their long-absent father returns. Each must go on a separate journey to break the cycles of abandonment in their family. At 5 pm, the Jack Welch Developmental Fellowship presents “Miller Hill” by Sinan Ünel, directed by Scott Edmiston. Late one night, Greg visits the Provincetown pier looking for a ghost in a fishing boat. He wants to say goodbye to an old friend before he and Paul leave town. Spanning the AIDS epidemic and its losses, the play follows the lifelong friendship of four men in a Provincetown where past and present, the living and the dead, and memory and imagination meet. The Jack Welch Fund for Playwrights gives Boston Playwrights’ Theatre endowed support each year to develop new work by playwrights. The fund was seeded by the estate of Jack Welch, who died in 2017, in keeping with his wishes. He was a longtime champion of Boston’s theatre community through Baker’s Plays, StageSource, the Massachusetts Young Playwrights’ Project and the Boston Theater Marathon.
