Harpist Charles Overton will be among the featured performers in the Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra’s winter concert “An Afternoon of Chamber Music,” February 17 at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Harwich Port.
THE ENTERPRISE – Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra (CCCO), the region’s newest professional orchestra, will present its 2019 winter concert An Afternoon of Chamber Music on February 17 at 3 PM, at Pilgrim Congregational Church, 533 Main Street, Route 28 in Harwich Port.
A reception will follow with an opportunity to meet the musicians.
Conductor Matthew Scinto and Composer-in-Residence Francis Snyder will offer a pre-concert discussion at 2:15 PM.
An Afternoon of Chamber Music is the third performance in the orchestra’s four-concert inaugural season series Navigations.
The concert will offer performances of Mendelssohn’s “String Octet in Eb Major,” the debut of new art songs by composer-in-residence Francis Snyder, Bach’s “Brandenburg Concerto No. 3,” and Saint-Saëns “Fantaisie for Violin and Harp.”
A Boston-based composer and conductor, Mr. Snyder collaborated with Mr. Scinto and mezzo-soprano Marissa Plati to create “Another,” a work based on several riddles by Irish poet Jonathan Swift, the author of “Gulliver’s Travels.”
Mr. Snyder scored the piece for mezzo-soprano, viola and piano, taking inspiration from Jonathan Swift’s home country by borrowing from many Irish folk tunes. According to Mr. Snyder, the work is set in several movements, each its own riddle, entitled, simply, “Another,” to allow the audience to enjoy the music, guess the answer to the riddle, or both.
Violinist Jean Huang and Harpist Charles Overton will be featured in Saint-Saëns “Fantaisie for Violin and Harp,” a piece written by Saint-Saëns in 1907, at age 72, while he relaxed on the Italian Riviera.
CCCO’s first season of Navigations is inspired by Mr. Scinto’s vision for the future of classical music on Cape Cod, which includes collaborations with Cape individuals, arts organizations and causes to create unique concert experiences of high-quality, enriching and memorable orchestral music. Featuring living composers is also an important part of CCCO’s mission.
