Expanded performances and OPEN format highlights of Season Four
McGRATHPR.com – Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra (CCCO), the Cape’s professional collaborative orchestra, announces its Season Four schedule of performances for 2021-22. The orchestra is conducted by Founding Music Director Matthew Scinto.
Following a year of digital innovation and pandemic limitations, Music Director Scinto is inspired. “I’m very grateful to our supporters for making a seemingly impossible online season work for our orchestra, helping us reach thousands of individuals and collaborating with great people and organizations here on Cape Cod. We are supercharged and ready to get back to the magic of live concerts”.
CCCO prides itself on exceptional programming and its collaborative performances, a highlight of every season. Season Four previews with “Season Kickoff & Serenade,” its first live performance in 18 months, which launches OPEN – a new format combining performance, audience interaction, and a behind-the-scenes look into an orchestra rehearsal. The Harwich Port concert features Dvořák’s Serenade for Strings, exploring the composer’s American ties and his beloved work, followed by a wine and cheese reception and season preview presentation. Fall weather and the spooky season inspires a “Ghost Hunters” program in Chatham, examining the story of Liza Tower Hill, the “Witch of Barnstable”, together with ghost stories and music by Vaughan Williams, Bartok and Haydn. “Shaw, Barber & Tchaikovsky” delivers a November treat – an eclectic program of music for strings by Barber and Tchaikovsky bookending the mesmerizing Entr’acte by Caroline Shaw.
The heralded holiday performance season resumes with “Summer Holiday” in Chatham and Harwich Port, boasting some mid-winter warmth with soprano Sarah Joyce Cooper in Barber’s “Knoxville, Summer of 1915”, and works by Price and Ives, benefiting WE CAN as they celebrate 20 years of empowering women. The Orchestra resumes its acquaintance with Heritage Museum and Gardens in a reflective program on its founder’s prized collections in February with “CCCO @ Heritage: Walker, Copland, Forrest & Beethoven”, featuring the world premiere of Composer-in-Residence Cody Forrest’s latest new work showcasing CCCO cellist Joseph Gotoff. Season Four concludes with “The Lark Ascending” in Chatham and Harwich Port, a collaborative concert with Mass Audubon and Wild Care Cape Cod, supporting the treatment of wildlife, community engagement, conservation and volunteerism. Concertmaster Jean Huang is featured in Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, while a quintet of woodwinds takes the audience on flight with Peteris Vasks’ “Music for Fleeting Birds,” and more.

Join us for our first live event in over 18 months. OPEN is a new format we are launching, combining performance, audience interaction, and a behind-the-scenes look into an orchestra rehearsal. Music Director Matt Scinto and the CCCO strings take us through Dvořák’s Serenade for Strings, exploring the composer’s American ties and the elements that makes this work one of the most beloved pieces for string orchestra.

Our fourth season opens just in time for Halloween. Join us as we take a look into the story of Liza Tower Hill, otherwise known as the Witch of Barnstable, said to have been dancing on Mary Dunn Pond each night with a crew of otherworldly creatures. Other Cape Cod folk lore fills the room, in this program of ghost stories and music.
Franz Joseph Haydn leads the hunt as we search for this Barnstable Witch in his famous Symphony No. 73 “The Hunt”. Vaughan Williams’ “Death of Tintagiles” tells the gloomy tale of a queen who captures a family, leaving others to attempt to rescue them. We conclude with Bartok’s Divertimento for Strings, written in 1939 as Europe began to enter dark times before World War II.

We return with a program of eclectic music for strings featuring the music of Caroline Shaw. The Yarmouth New Church Preservation Foundation is a non-religious, non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the historically registered former church on Yarmouth Port common as a vibrant cultural center for public benefit and use. The CCCO will perform Barber’s Adagio for Strings, Tchaikovsky’s thrilling Serenade for Strings, and Entr’acte by Caroline Shaw. On her work Shaw writes: “Entr’acte was written in 2011 after hearing the Brentano Quartet play Haydn’s Op. 77 No. 2 — with their spare and soulful shift to the D-flat major trio in the minuet. It is structured like a minuet and trio, riffing on that classical form but taking it a little further. I love the way some music (like the minuets of Op. 77) suddenly takes you to the other side of Alice’s looking glass, in a kind of absurd, subtle, technicolor transition.”

Guess what? Summer has come early. Join us for some mid-winter warmth featuring soprano Sarah Joyce Cooper in Samuel Barber’s Knoxville, Summer of 1915. Barber paints an idyllic, nostalgic picture of Knoxville, Tennessee based on text by James Agee. The work is a simple, dreamlike depiction of an evening in the American South, narrated by a child. The CCCO will also perform the Andante movement from Florence Price’s String Quartet No. 1, concluding with Charles Ives’ trip to camp with his Third Symphony “The Camp Meeting”.
The Saturday evening performance is a benefit for WE CAN, as they celebrate 20 years of empowering women on Cape Cod.

CCCO @ Heritage: Beethoven in the Barn

We are excited to return to the automobile barn at Heritage Museum & Gardens for this exciting program of George Walker, Copland, Beethoven, and a world premiere by composer-in-residence Cody Forrest featuring CCCO cellist Joseph Gotoff.
The auto collection was originally assembled by Heritage’s founder, Josiah Kirby Lilly III. His father, J.K. Lilly Jr., amassed world-class collections of gold coins, rare books, stamps, firearms, and more. J.K. Lilly III did not catch the collecting “bug” until March of 1964. His collection grew quickly. “For me the purchase of one antique car was the beginning of the search for more. After I picked up a few cars, people started to find me!” he reminisced. Over the next three years his collection expanded as quickly as funds and garage space would allow. We look forwarded to returning to Heritage in his reflective and fun program.

Season Four concludes with a collaborative concert with Wild Care Cape Cod, whose mission is to treat injured, ill and orphaned native wildlife for release, and to engage the community in conservation through volunteerism.
Our concertmaster Jean Huang will be featured in Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, as we look towards the sky. A quintet of CCCO winds takes us on a flight with Peteris Vasks’ “Music for Fleeting Birds”, ending our concert with Mozart’s stormy Symphony No. 40. Join us for our season finale and learn about our incredible avian friends

About Dr. Matthew Scinto, Conductor
Matthew Scinto is an emerging conductor based in Cape Cod, where he currently serves as Founder and Music Director of the Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra and the Music Director for the Civic Orchestra of New Haven (CT). He has twice studied conducting at the prestigious Tanglewood Music Center, was recently finalist for the Assistant Conductor of the San Antonio Symphony, and also currently serves as a cover conductor for the Portland (ME) Symphony. He received his Doctor of Musical Art’s degree from Boston University, where he received the Conducting Department Award for Excellence in Conducting. Dr. Scinto has been involved in Alzheimer’s care for the past several years, working with memory care facilities at Maplewood Senior Living in Brewster, MA and Bridges in Mashpee, MA. He is also a frequent guest of the Arts & Ideas program with the Alzheimer’s Family Support Center of Cape Cod for caregivers and loved ones with memory loss. By using aspects of music appreciation and conducting, Dr. Scinto has developed curriculum for working with individuals dealing with memory loss in order to allow them to reconnect to their loved ones and enjoy fun movement to music. In addition to conducting, Dr. Scinto has been teaching private piano, violin, and viola lessons for over a decade, currently at Steeple St. Music Academy in Mashpee, MA
