THE ENTERPRISE – The Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra has announced the schedule for its third season, titled “Voices of the Cape.” The schedule will include programming featuring the story of Liza Tower Hill, known as “The Witch of Barnstable,” along with George Crumb’s “The Voice of the Whale.”
The season will start with “Ghost Hunters” on Saturday and Sunday, October 10 and 11, at venues in Chatham and Harwich Port.
In time for Halloween, the orchestra’s first concert of the season will feature the story of Liza Tower Hill, aka “The Witch of Barnstable,” said to have danced nightly on Mary Dunn Pond with a crew of otherworldly creatures. Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra composer-in-residence Cody Forrest has written a new composition about Ms. Hill that premieres on those nights. The orchestra will pair the new composition with Arnold Schoenberg’s “Transfigured Night.”
Summer will come early on December 12 and 13 when the orchestra presents “A Summer Holiday.” The concerts will feature soprano Sarah Joyce Cooper in Samuel Barber’s “Knoxville, Summer of 1915.” The program will also feature George Butterworth’s “On the Banks of Green Willow,” along with Dvorak’s sunny “Serenade for Strings.” The two concerts will be a benefit for the Alzheimer’s Family Support Center of Cape Cod.
In 2021 the orchestra will perform “Voice of the Whale,” a program featuring the title work along with Amy Beach’s rarely performed Piano Quintet and another piece from Mr. Forrest. “Voice of the Whale” will be performed on Sunday, February 14.
The season will wrap up on Sunday, April 18, with “The Lark Ascending,” a concert in collaboration with Wild Care Cape Cod, a Cape agency whose mission is to treat injured, ill and orphaned native wildlife for release, and engage the community in conservation through volunteerism.
The program will include Vaughan Williams’s “The Lark Ascending,” Gustav Holst’s “Brook Green Suite,” Mozart’s Symphony No. 28 in A and a work by Mr. Forrest inspired by native birds.
Season passes to the Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra’s upcoming season can be purchased for $100 on the group’s website. Passes are non-refundable but are transferable.
The Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra was founded by director Matthew Scinto in 2017 with the mission of making classical music more appealing to a wide range of audiences.
