SUMMARY:Patriots of Color Exhibit at American Ancestors' Family Heritage Experience
DESCRIPTION:In observance of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, American Ancestors’ Family Heritage Experience unveils “Patriots of Color\,” a major new exhibition opening Thursday\, April 23\, at 97 Newbury Street\, Boston. The exhibit brings long-overlooked stories of Black\, Native\, and multiracial individuals into full view—revealing their vital roles in the founding of our nation and the living descendants who carry their legacies forward today. \nThousands of Black men fought in the American Revolution—an estimated 5\,000 to 9\,000 for the Patriot cause and as many as 20\,000 supporting the British\, many seeking freedom from enslavement—yet their contributions remain underrepresented in traditional accounts of the nation’s founding. Set against the backdrop of Boston’s central role in the Revolution\, “Patriots of Color” highlights profiles of 26 individuals—two from each of the original 13 colonies—whose service\, labor\, leadership\, and resistance shaped the Revolutionary cause in ways rarely taught or remembered today. Through original documents\, immersive digital experiences\, and contemporary artistic interpretation\, the exhibition reframes the Revolution as a far more complex and inclusive struggle for independence. \nA centerpiece of the exhibition is a large-scale interactive digital map of the 13 colonies\, which invites visitors to tap and explore information about 26 individual Patriots\, represented by silhouettes designed by teenage artists from the Cambridge Community Art Center’s Teen Public Art Program. Interactive screens about the patriots reveal biographical details\, service histories\, and—most powerfully—their connection to modern-day living descendants\, some of whom are expected to attend the exhibition’s opening events. Also on view are original 18th- and 19th-century manuscripts\, military muster rolls\, family Bibles\, and historic engravings—archival materials that bring overlooked Revolutionary lives into focus and reveal the research process behind their rediscovery. \nThe exhibit is part of American Ancestors’ 10 Million Names initiative\, which aims to recover the names and lives of enslaved people through archival research. \n“What makes ‘Patriots of Color’ distinctive is not only who these individuals were\, but how we know them\,” said Ryan Woods\, President and CEO of American Ancestors. “This exhibition shows that history is not fixed or finished. Through documents\, research\, and genealogy\, it is possible to uncover real\, personal connections to the past—and\, in doing so\, better understand our present.” \nSilhouettes of Legacy \nReinforcing the exhibition’s themes of interpretation and intergenerational storytelling\, “Patriots of Color” includes a collaborative component with the Cambridge Community Art Center’s Teen Public Art Program. Founded in 1937\, the Community Art Center has long served as a creative anchor in Cambridge\, empowering young people through public art and community-rooted expression. \nFor “Patriots of Color\,” students were invited to create imaginative silhouette artwork inspired by historical profiles of Patriots. The resulting silhouette portraits draw on an historic artistic tradition that predates photography\, when profile portraits were an accessible way to preserve a person’s likeness. In this context\, the form carries particular resonance: silhouettes assert presence\, a demonstration that a life was lived. \nDisplayed alongside the historical narratives\, and each artist’s biography\, these contemporary works place today’s youth artists in dialogue with Revolutionary era lives. Their inclusion underscores the exhibition’s broader message that history is not static—it is continually interpreted\, expanded\, and made visible across generations. \nAdditional exhibition elements explore how Patriots of Color contributed beyond military service\, the difficult choices—or lack of choice—between Patriot and Loyalist allegiances\, and the painstaking process of reconstructing lives through muster rolls\, family Bibles\, pension files\, and other primary sources. Throughout\, visitors are encouraged to see themselves not just as observers of history\, but as participants in reclaiming it. \n“Patriots of Color” remains on view through December 31\, 2026\, with an opening celebration and public programs planned in conjunction with Revolution 250 commemorations in Boston. \nExhibit Highlights:\n\nPatriots of Color profiles—two from each of the original 13 colonies—featured through an expansive interactive digital map\nConnections between Revolutionary-era Patriots and living descendants\, bringing the story of the Revolution into the present day\nOriginal manuscripts\, muster rolls\, engravings\, and family records that demonstrate how historical lives are recovered through genealogical research\nA dynamic touchscreen experience inviting visitors to explore service\, resistance\, and legacy across the colonies\, with direct links to American Ancestors’ 10 Million Names initiative\nA collaborative public art installation featuring silhouette works created by Community Art Center Teen Public Art Program artists\, interpreting individual Patriot stories through contemporary creative expression\n\n“Patriots of Color: Reclaiming Stories of Courage\, Resistance\, and Legacy” reframes the American Revolution through the lens of family history—demonstrating that the nation’s founding stories are not fixed in the past\, but can be rediscovered\, reinterpreted\, and reclaimed through research\, documents\, and lived connection. \nExhibit Opening:        April 23\, 2026 \nOn View:                    Through December 31\, 2026\, Tuesday through Saturday\, 10 am to 6 pm \nLocation:                    Family Heritage Experience at American Ancestors\, 97 Newbury Street\, Boston\, MA \nAdmission:                 $10 for adults. SUMMARY:Jason Bird: Parlor of Impossibilities in W. Hartford\, Westport & Mystic CT
DESCRIPTION:Magician and mentalist Jason Bird\, longtime Las Vegas headliner\, brings “Parlor of Impossibilities\,” his intimate evening of magic and mentalism\, home to his native state of Connecticut.  Fourteen 90-minute performances spanning three Delamar hotel properties offer an intimate room of just 60 guests ‘a night so exclusive\, even reality isn’t invited.’  Delamar West Hartford and Delamar Westport feature the show on select Sundays\, from October through December\, and the captivating show makes its Mystic debut in December at Delamar Mystic. Show dates offer performances at both 4 pm and 7 pm. \nBird brings more than 25 years and 9\,000 performances to the series\, including years headlining in Las Vegas at properties such as Bally’s and Caesars\, and national television appearances on NBC\, Fox and The CW’s “Masters of Illusion.” Bringing his long-applauded Nevada success to the east coast\, Bird is focused on building this residency in his home state and beyond: a recurring series of intimate\, elegant evenings inspired by the 19th-century tradition of parlor and salon magic. \n\n\n\n\n\n“I spent years performing big shows in big rooms\,” Bird said. “But there is something entirely different about magic when the audience sits just a few feet from the action. Guests can see and hear everything. They’re holding the objects at hand. They’re making the choices on how the show progresses. There’s nowhere for me to disappear\, and that’s exactly why it’s exciting.” \n“Parlor of Impossibilities” moves deliberately in the opposite direction from Las Vegas spectacle. No stage separates performer from audience. Sleight of hand\, psychological illusion\, mind reading and impossible predictions unfold only feet\, and sometimes inches\, from where guests are seated\, and at times the audience becomes part of the illusion itself. The resulting fusion experience combines theater\, magic\, and humor set as an unusually mysterious cocktail party. \n“Magic has a reputation for being either something for children or a fiery spectacle\, with dancers and people disappearing from boxes\,” Bird said. “There’s another tradition I’ve always loved: the magician in a beautiful room with a small group of people\, where the impossibility happens right in front of you. That’s what I wanted to bring back.” \n\n\nThe series found its first Connecticut home at Delamar West Hartford\, where sold-out performances revealed an appetite for sophisticated\, intimate live entertainment. It now extends to Delamar Westport and Delamar Mystic\, bringing the Parlor to southeastern Connecticut\, an entertaining treat during the holiday season. Paired with Delamar’s hospitality and dining\, each performance is designed as a complete evening out\, suited to date nights\, special occasions\, holiday gatherings\, corporate groups and visitors. Guests are invited to dress for the occasion in cocktail or evening attire\, if they wish. \n\n“There are beautiful hotels\, restaurants\, historic towns and people here who genuinely want interesting things to do just like in Vegas\,” Bird said. “We started asking ourselves: Why shouldn’t Connecticut have something like this?”\n\nBird said the real subject of the show isn’t magic\, but wonder. “Adults become very good at knowing how everything works\,” he said. “We Google it. We explain it. We solve it. There aren’t many opportunities left to sit in a room and genuinely say\, ‘I have absolutely no idea how that happened.” \n\n\nTickets for “Parlor of Impossibilities” range from $125 to $250. Ticket options can include a meet-and-greet with Jason Bird\, a photo with the artist\, a Q&A\, additional close-up magic. The $250 front-row VIP package includes the meet-and-greet and a souvenir “Parlor of Impossibilities” deck of cards. Tickets are available at ci.ovationtix.com/37012. The show contains no profanity or adult content and is recommended for guests age 12 and older. Performances begin on time with no late seating. Guests should arrive 20 to 30 minutes early and enjoy a beverage at the Delamar bar. Learn more at parlorofimpossibilities.com. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Jason Bird Productions \n\nMagician\, mentalist and author Jason Bird is a longtime Las Vegas headliner with more than 25 years of professional experience and 9\,000+ performances worldwide. His television appearances include experiences on NBC\, Fox and The CW’s “Masters of Illusion\,” and his work has been featured in Forbes\, LA Weekly\, the Los Angeles Times\, the Las Vegas Sun\, Vanish Magazine and Genii Magazine. He has performed for Fortune 100 companies\, celebrities\, professional athletes and royal families\, and his corporate clients include Google\, American Express\, Microsoft\, BMW and AT&T. \nKnown for his humorous\, intelligent and elegant style\, Bird blends sleight of hand\, psychology\, mentalism and storytelling to create experiences in which audiences surpass witnessing the impossible\, they participate in it. SUMMARY:Meadows Montessori School Open House\, Westborough
DESCRIPTION:Meadows Montessori School (MMS)\, Westborough’s new Montessori-method educational preschool opening in January 2027\, presents two “Open House” events for families to explore. On Saturday\, October 24\, from 3 to 4:30 pm\, families are invited to a ‘Meadows Nature Day’ themed event\, featuring outdoor gross motor and nature activities in celebration of fall. On Saturday\, November 7\, 9:30 to 11 am\, the school welcomes families to a second “Open House” featuring a Bracken Hill Farms’ petting zoo\, with small goats\, alpacas and bunnies on site. Both events take place at the school’s new location\, situated at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church\, 183 West Main Street\, Westborough. Admission is free\, families are welcome\, and refreshments will be served. \n“We created Meadows Montessori to be a small\, community school where every child is known\,” shares MMS Cofounder Heather Vinci. “Children learn best through meaningful\, hands-on experiences\, time outdoors in nature\, and the freedom to follow their own curiosity. Our open houses are a wonderful opportunity for families to explore Montessori materials\, and see firsthand how joyful learning can be. We can’t wait to welcome our new neighbors this fall and officially open our doors on January 4.” \nMMS embraces a mixed-age model educating children ages 2.9 through 6. Also serving as a lead teacher\, Vinci and her partner have developed a rich learning environment combining Montessori materials in a warm\, home-like classroom where older children take on leadership roles among their peers. Students engage in gross motor development through yoga and mindfulness\, weekly enrichment in nature and music\, and ample outdoor time for students to connect and explore the world around them. \n\n\n\n\n\nVinci brings more than 14 years of experience as a lead primary teacher\, forest educator and summer camp director at The Riverbend School in South Natick\, and cofounded South Shore Montessori School in Cohasset in 2023. She holds an AMS Montessori credential from Northeast Montessori Institute and a master’s degree in leadership and policy in early education from Wheelock College at Boston University. \nMMS offers a full day program from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm on weekdays\, a half day program from 8:30 to 11:30 am\, with morning care beginning at 7:30 am\, and extended day until 5 pm\, giving working families flexible options. \nMontessori-style learning was the innovation of Dr. Maria Montessori – physician\, educator\, advocate for world peace – and founder of the Montessori education method. Dr. Montessori developed her unique teaching model and materials in the early 1900’s\, still thriving today. Montessori educator certification is a two-year program\, incorporating the many facets of a Montessori environment\, from language\, math\, geography\, science\, nature\, sensorial and practical life – the cornerstone of the Montessori education. \n\nMontessori educators cultivate the naturally eager and capable qualities in children\, inspiring them to self-explore the initiation and pursuit of learning\, guided by their own interests. Educators deliver guidance through thoughtfully prepared\, age-appropriate activities and environment\, nurturing children’s cognitive\, social\, emotional\, and physical development. Students embrace the agency to self-select work\, leading to intrinsic motivation and sustained attention. \nTo register to attend an “Open House” (registration form TBA)\, or to learn more about MMS’s full\, half and extended day programs\, curriculum\, enrollment\, or to contact the directors\, visit meadowsmontessoriwestboro.com\, or call 508-296-0365. Fittingly\, the afternoon also marks a first of its own — the inaugural performance led by MetWinds’ new music director\, Gabe Southard. \n“There’s a First Time for Everything” features repertoire including Adam Gorb’s “Awayday\,” Holst’s “First Suite in E-flat for Military Band” (edited by Colin Matthews)\, John Mackey’s “Strange Humors\,” Dana Wilson’s “Piece of Mind\,” John Stevens’ “Benediction\,” and Frank Ticheli’s “Postcard.” \nDr. Robert “Gabe” Southard joined the faculty of Gordon College in 2022 as Associate Teaching Professor of Music\, where he conducts the Gordon Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Band. He previously served as Associate Professor of Music and Director of Bands at Hope College in Michigan\, leading the Winds and Brass area and the Instrumental Music Education area\, and earlier held posts as Wind Symphony conductor and flute instructor at the University of Michigan-Flint. Southard holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting from Michigan State University\, along with master’s and bachelor’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Ithaca College. An active orchestrator\, his projects include a wind ensemble arrangement of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Symphony No. 2\, “Antar.” As a flutist\, Southard has performed as principal flute of the Holland Symphony Orchestra and with several other orchestras\, and in 2020 was named a Pearl Flute Artist. Southard was selected as MetWinds’ new music director after leading the ensemble through a season of guest-conducted concerts and takes the podium full time this season. \nMetWinds\, formally known as the Metropolitan Wind Symphony\, was founded in 1971 by Jerry Gardner\, and was honored with the Sudler Silver Scroll Award for Community Concert Bands from the John Philip Sousa Foundation. The all-volunteer ensemble draws more than 60 auditioned woodwind\, brass and percussion musicians from over 30 communities across Massachusetts and neighboring states\, and has called the town of Lexington home for 20 years. MetWinds is a longtime contributor to the region’s wind band literature through its Commissioning Fund and has helped shape the local music education landscape through programs including the Boston Festival of Bands and the Continuum series. \nMetWinds’ concerts are funded in whole or in part by local cultural councils\, chapters of Massachusetts Cultural Council\, and the National Endowment for the Arts. MetWinds also participates in the Card to Culture Program\, which offers reduced admission to EBT\, WIC and Health Connector cardholders. \nFor tickets and more information\, visit metwinds.org\, and follow MetWinds on Facebook\, Twitter\, YouTube and Instagram.

SUMMARY:Boston Playwrights' Theatre's Fall Rep Festival
DESCRIPTION:Boston Playwrights’ Theatre (BPT)\, Boston University’s award-winning professional theatre dedicated to new work\, presents its “Fall Rep Festival\,” featuring two new plays running in repertory November 5 through 22 at 949 Commonwealth Avenue\, Boston: Yide Cai’s “White Phoenix\,” directed by Dmitry Troyanovsky\, and Rachel Beth Greene’s “Jessica of Venice\,” directed by Josh Glenn-Kayden. The pairing brings together two distinct worlds: a Chinese family torn apart across an ocean\, and an Orthodox Jewish community set in the present day. Performed on the same stage\, the two plays ask a shared question: what is the cost of crossing the distance between two worlds? \n\n\n\n\n\nTold by just two actors\, “White Phoenix” is a sweeping family drama that unfolds across decades and continents. The play follows a Chinese orphan who vows to find the sister he lost\, tracing his path to adulthood in China alongside a dangerous entanglement with the daughter of a powerful political family. Meanwhile\, his sister comes of age an ocean away\, adopted into a prominent American senatorial family and drawn into a secret romance of her own. As their two stories finally converge\, the siblings’ long-awaited reunion becomes a mirror for the fraught\, complicated relationship between their two countries. \nCai\, whose writing draws on classical Chinese drama\, particularly “The Peony Pavilion\,” built the epic for a cast of two on purpose. “The audience will serve as witness to the effort of two actors embodying four distinct\, almost opposite characters\,” he says. “It’s this magic of making something out of nothing. That’s what’s always special about theater: the imagination. Even though the two siblings spend the entire play trying to find each other\, the two actors playing them are together on stage the whole time.” \n\n\nCai is writing against the habit of treating nations as people. “We tend to assume the country or the government and the people who live in it are the same thing\,” he explains. “Instead of symbols\, my characters are the opposite: prisoners and victims of the countries they belong to. There is China everywhere in America\, like TikTok\, bubble tea and rare earth minerals\, and America everywhere in China\, like Starbucks and Hollywood movies. But neither side really wants to talk about it with clarity.” \n\n\nSet in the present day but steeped in Early Modern echoes\, “Jessica of Venice” follows a group of Orthodox Jewish schoolgirls who discover a banned copy of Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice” and become fascinated by its rebellious runaway daughter. For one restless teen caught between her tight-knit community and a budding crush outside it\, the discovery starts to blur the line between the story on the page and the life she’s beginning to imagine for herself. \nGreene\, a self-described Shakespeare buff\, grew up in the observant Jewish world she depicts. “Jessica is so often portrayed as selfish and coldhearted towards her father\,” she says. “But rarely is she considered within her context: as a curious\, sheltered young girl with big dreams. I too was raised in the observant Jewish world and understand how it feels to struggle with the practices of traditional religious life as an ambitious\, inquisitive teenager.” She links the play’s close reading of Shakespeare to Torah study\, where students read “between the lines” of texts centered on male protagonists to expand their understanding of the world. \n\n\n\n\n\nGreene writes with outsiders in mind. “I am acutely aware that most audience members will have never set foot in a Hasidic Jewish community\,” she notes. “Audiences should expect not to know every single word spoken onstage. But if I’ve done my job right\, that will not stand in the way of them understanding the story – in fact\, it might even help.” She adds that the play has no villain: “I believe these characters all act from a place of good\, if often mismatched\, intentions.” \nStaged side by side\, the two plays speak to each other. “A theme we have discovered that runs between our stories is the idea of characters who inhabit two separate worlds\, and the yearning to reach through the space between them\,” says Greene. For Cai\, the pairing points to a shared warning: “Heaven is in the making\, in the everyday life we already have\, with the people already around us. The moment we idolize or covet an elsewhere\, or an ‘other\,’ we create our own downfall.” \nBoth playwrights resist an easy verdict on what separation costs. “Before we ask whether the cost was worth it\, we need to acknowledge and honor the cost\, and the suffering of the people who bore it\,” says Cai. Greene leaves the question with the audience: “These conflicts are too intricate and fraught for a ‘right answer.’ I hope the audience leaves the theater pondering this very question.” \n“On the one hand\, it is devastating watching characters in these plays be willing to sacrifice almost anything to escape from the communities that made them\,” said BPT Artistic Director Megan Sandberg-Zakian. “But on the other\, there is something inspiring about characters who dream of a better world\, and believe\, against all odds\, that there is a place somewhere that will offer them the opportunity to feel fully themselves. It’s an inherently optimistic – and very American – kind of dramatic action.” \nThe creative teams include Stage Managers Jess Brennan* (“White Phoenix”) and Erin Lerch* (“Jessica of Venice”). *Appearing through an Agreement between Boston Playwrights’ Theatre and Actors’ Equity Association\, the Union of Professional Actors and Stage Managers in the United States. \n\n\nFall Rep Festival Details \n“White Phoenix” by Yide Cai\, directed by Dmitry Troyanovsky\, featuring Philip Zeng* as Li CunYi and Gabriel Bradford\, with Serena Zhu as Li CunXin and Zhao YanYan. \n*Appearing through an Agreement between Boston Playwrights’ Theatre and Actors’ Equity Association\, the Union of Professional Actors and Stage Managers in the United States. \nPerformances:  Select dates from Nov. 5 through 22 \n\n\nThursday\, November 5 at 7:00 pm \nFriday\, November 6 at 8:00 pm \nSaturday\, November 7 at 8:00 pm \nSaturday\, November 14 at 2:00 pm** \n\n\nSunday\, November 15 at 7:00 pm** \nThursday\, November 19 at 7:00 pm \nSaturday\, November 21 at 8:00 pm** \nSunday\, November 22 at 2:00 pm** \n\n\nPay-What-You-Want Previews: Thurs.\, Nov. 5\, 7 pm\, and Fri.\, Nov. 6\, 8 pm \nPost-show Conversation: Thursday\, November 19\, after the 7 pm performance \nContent transparency: “White Phoenix” contains an extended depiction of a consensual romantic relationship between adopted siblings.
Buckley\, invites audiences to an afternoon of wonderful music\, holiday spirit\, and community singing. With professional soloists\, a chamber ensemble and pianist Edward Poston\, the chorus shares the glorious Christmas portion of Handel’s “Messiah\,” including the beloved “Hallelujah” chorus – and this time\, audience members won’t just listen\, they’ll have a chance to join in and sing it\, too! \n  \nThe holiday celebration also includes Judith Clurman and David Chase’s beautiful Hanukkah piece\, “Eight Days of Lights\,” familiar seasonal favorites\, and a joyful audience carol sing\, from “O Come\, All Ye Faithful” to “Jingle Bells” and “Deck the Hall.” Bringing audiences together across traditions\, generations\, and musical tastes\, there’s something for everyone – whether a love of the grandeur of “Messiah\,” the warmth of a familiar carol\, or the fun of singing with a crowd. \n  \nAbout Choral Art Society of the South Shore \nis an educational\, non-profit organization dedicated to bringing outstanding choral music to the picturesque communities of Massachusetts’ South Shore. Our members and audience are from every community in the area\,  including the many cities and towns of Norfolk and Plymouth Counties. Averaging 60 members\, CAS has been a stalwart in the New England choral community since 1958. For more than 65 years\, CAS has performed an extensive repertoire of choral music from the Renaissance to the 21st century with professional orchestra and soloists. Known for the exceptional quality of its concerts\, CAS has set the standard on the South Shore. \n  \nCAS singers and audiences experience the great classical works of such composers as Bach\, Mozart\, Beethoven\, Vivaldi\, Brahms\, Fauré\, Haydn\, Puccini\, and Schubert as well as more contemporary composers such as Britten\, Rutter\, and Vaughan Williams. No two concerts are alike\, and they represent musical offerings that span hundreds of years\, a multitude of nationalities\, and musical styles from oratorios to American spirituals. The quality of CAS concerts springs from a single common bond shared by all members — a love of singing and sharing outstanding music with our community. From the known to the new; from the emotional power of large choral works to the tenderness of smaller a cappella pieces; from dramatic and innovative contemporary works to lighthearted seasonal music — CAS does it all. \n  \nWe welcome singers of all ages twice a year ahead of our Winter and Spring concert seasons (once in September and once in January). Our members have a wide range of musical experience — though previous training and choral singing is helpful; it is not a requirement to sing. Each season begins with two open rehearsals that allow new people to join us in song. Members are always welcome to sing in one or both seasons.  Learn more at choralartsociety.org. \n
